During my residency at @startas_festival I am lucky to work with @ievutelape local Lithuanian dancer and choreographer as my choreography assistant - or is like to say the outsider performer ! One of the best things about being interviewed is that you get to reflect on yourself and your process. I think once in a while we should ask our colleagues and friends to interview each other as a way to reconnect with our art and practices . At the final symposium of @migrant_bodies , together with Sangeeta Isvaran and moderated by Monica Gillette we discussed our interpretation of the @migrant_bodies Publication and glossary in relation to our dance making and teaching. We spoke about the body as an archival library of habits and experiences and how dance can be a way of unpacking and better understanding our own archives, and in a way ourselves and the world we are in contact with. I talked about the power dynamics in ‘space’ and the vision to turn hierarchies into horizontal spectrums of co-existence (heard from Liz Lerman !). This time the words ‘empathy’ and ‘dignity’ had a clearer active meaning specially in the context of empowerment. It was humbling to be given time to speak and be heard. I was welcomed by the #bassano dance community to teach a workshop at @museibassano during the @migrant_bodies moving borders #symposium . The experience still remains as a strong and impactful memory. The space was shared among a diverse group of participants , from different countries and ages and backgrounds of movement . In the room there was the #dancewellness population of mostly seniors, professional dance artists from #danceidentity #did and the facilitators of @migrant_bodies , as well as non-EU refugees and immigrants including myself. Together we gathered each other’s gestures derived from our names and mood of the day. We put our gestures together in an improvised dance orchestra while I conducted the group through live choreography. It was challenging to be quick in responding , but the quality of being on the edge and making fast decisions are somethings that I’m interested in specially when juxtaposed with the experience of a migrant. #dance #dancing #dancer #contemporarydance #danceworkshop #danceteacher #choreographer #choreography #improv #improvisation #immigration #performance #migrantbodiesmovingborders
